Scirus Receives 'Best Directory or Search Engine' WebAward

Scirus was very excited to receive the 2004 "Best Directory or Search Engine" WebAward from the Web Marketing Association (WMA).

Since 1997, the WebAwards competition has been conducted annually by the WMA, a global organization founded with the purpose of evaluating and recognizing the standard of excellence on the World Wide Web. Entries were judged against ever-increasing Internet standards and peers on a worldwide basis, and the assessment included overall design, innovation, content, technology, interactivity, copywriting and ease of use.

Scirus is proud to receive such a respected international award, recognizing our commitment to providing an unbiased and user-friendly resource for Web searching.

Please go to the Scirus Newsroom for the complete story and the press release.

Full-text American Institute of Physics Journals Indexed in
    Scirus

Scirus is pleased to announce that it has partnered with the American Institute of Physics (AIP) to index its full-text articles.
AIP is a leading publisher of physics research literature and serves to promote the advancement of physics knowledge worldwide.
Having already indexed AIP abstracts, Scirus has now successfully indexed more than 230,000 full-text journal articles, from such prestigious titles as Applied Physics Letters, Chaos, Journal of Applied Physics, and The Journal of Chemical Physics, among others. AIP results found on Scirus will direct users to Scitation.org, AIP's new online hosting service.

Scirus ensures optimum results by consistently identifying the appropriate method of indexing to ensure complete coverage. In the case of AIP, Scirus was able to work with CrossRef(tm) and use the infrastructure that was developed for CrossRef Search to index all available AIP articles. Scirus directs its users to all appropriate AIP content through the use of the CrossRef Digital Object Identifier (DOI), ensuring accurate and persistent links to the authorized versions of the articles.

To view AIP results, execute a search on Scirus. You may restrict your search to Scitation.org by using the Advanced Search options. The press release can be found in the Scirus Newsroom

  IUCr Content Indexed in Scirus

The International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) partnered with Scirus to have its content indexed. The IUCr is a world- leading scientific union dedicated to serving and promoting the international community of crystallographers. Scirus has also successfully indexed more than 56,000 full-text journal articles and abstracts from such prestigious titles as Acta Crystallographica Journals Sections A-F, Journal of Applied Crystallography and Journal of Synchrotron Radiation.

The addition of IUCr to our index makes it easier for researchers using Scirus to find first-rate chemistry publications.

As with all journal content on Scirus, IUCr results will be branded on the results page, assuring users the content is from a validated source. Scirus also pays special attention to displaying all results accurately, including all-important bibliographical information.

You can read more about IUCr in the press release, or try a search on Scirus.

  Millions of Patents at Scirus

Scirus has extended its coverage of patents greatly with the addition of almost 13 million patents to its index. Patents in Scirus include those from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the European Patent Office (EPO), the Japanese Patent Office (JPO) and the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Adding patents supports Scirus' strategy to continuously expand its coverage with new and valuable information sources.

The patents are obtained via a unique partnership with LexisNexis and are loaded in Scirus in close cooperation with LexisNexis, using Scirus' up-to-date technology for indexing scientific information.

The patents included in the Scirus index were selected on the criteria of being either scientific in nature or relevant to the scientific community based upon categorization used by patent offices. Every patent search result found on Scirus provides a link to the full text at the appropriate patent office or to EPO's Esp@cenet.

You can limit your search to patents only or search per patent office via the advanced search page

  Google Scholar

Google has recently launched a beta-version of Google Scholar. Since we received many questions on how Scirus compares to Google, we would like to take this opportunity to share our viewpoint with you.

In 2001, Elsevier already recognized that researchers and students have a strong need to not only search literature but also relevant scientific information on the Web, such as working papers, lab reports, author home pages, courseware etc. Scirus has been developed to do exactly that: It filters scientifically relevant content on the Web from the content that is not relevant for research or education purposes.

Using proprietary algorithms and index methods tuned to identify and capture relevant scientific relevant information on the Web, Scirus is able to cover the scientific Web in great depth.

As far as we know, Google Scholar does not cover the broader scientific Web, but instead focuses only on articles and books. Although the products may appeal to similar audiences they serve a different purpose.

  Send Us Your Feedback

Every day, we receive a great deal of positive feedback on our website. One quote we would like to share with you is from Radha Narayanan, Graduate Research Assistant, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA

"I think that Scirus is a very good search engine and I get results that are exactly related to the information I am looking for and don't get extraneous information."
